Now in its seventh year, this event had a record field of 540 runners and walkers signed up for the race in 2008. Bobby Mack set a new course record as he won in 14:40. Tara Wojciechowski was the women’s champion in 17:46. The event record for the women is 17:25 set by Jemima Semgong in 2005. |
| 5K Awards: |
In the 5K cash awards of $125, $75, and $50 will be presented to the first three males and first three females overall, respectively. There also is a $50 bonus to anyone setting a new course record. Additionally the first three finishers in each of the following age groups will receive awards: (both sexes) 12-under, 13-15, 16-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-over. All 5K entrants are eligible for the drawing of a free Lenovo Notebook, but one must be present to win. |
| Mile Awards: |
In the mile, awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups: 7-under, 8-10, and 11-13. |
| Team Competition: |
There also will be team competition with one male and one female category of teams for businesses and organizations (schools, military units, civic groups, etc., other than running clubs.) Team members must be employees or bona fide members of established businesses and organizations. Teams will consist of 3 to 5 runners with the first 3 runners scoring. Plaques will be mailed to the top 3 male and female teams. Winners will be determined by the sum of the finishing times. Mixed teams will be allowed, but will be considered male teams for scoring purposes. Each scoring member of winning teams will receive an award. Team members must register individually and indicate team membership on race day at the team table. |
| Second Empire Grand Prix: |
The 5K Run for Healthier Babies is also the fourth event in the eight-race Second Empire Grand Prix Series. Other races in the series include the Magnificent Mile in Raleigh on September 13, The Anna’s Angels 10-Mile Run in RTP on September 27, the Triangle Run/Walk for Autism( formerly the Autism Ribbon Run) in Raleigh on October 10, the Free to Breathe 5K in Raleigh on November 7, the Inside-Out Sports Turkey Trot 8K in Cary (Thanksgiving Day), the Jingle Bell Run in Raleigh on December 5, and the St. Michael School Jolly Elf Trail Run in Cary on December 12. Runners who participate in these eight races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant in January.
