| Background: |
This race is held to honor Sadiki Young, who was killed as a passenger in a drunk driving accident on January 14, 2007. Sadiki was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a senior at Wakefield High School. The race starts and finishes by the Church on 120 East Edenton Street in downtown Raleigh.
Over 400 runners and walkers turned out for the event last year. Brian Dotson took top honors in the 5K race in 17:37. Laura Frey ran 20:06 to win the women’s competition. The course records are held by Brian St. Onge (16:23) and Kasia Sujkowski (18:38). |
| Competitive vs Recreational: |
Entrants have a choice of entering as a Competitive Entrant (those who wish to be timed) or a Recreational entrant (those who do not want an official time). The registration fees are the same for each one - $20 ($25 after January 3 to and including race day.
There are special fees for students. If entering as a Competitive Entrant the fee is $15 and $20 after January 3. For students registering as Recreational Entrants, the fees are $10 and $15, respectively. |
| T-Shirts: |
The entry fee includes a t-shirt - guaranteed to all those registered by January 3, After that date, t-shirts will be given out on a "first-come, first-served" basis. |
| Late Registration/Packet Pick-Up: |
Pre-registered runners can pick up their packets and late entrants can register on Friday, January 8, from 5-7 pm at The Athlete’s Foot in Cameron Village OR on race day at Christ Episcopal Church beginning at 8:30 am. |
| Awards: |
Awards will be presented to the first three male and female finishers overall and to the top finisher in each of the following age groups, both male and female - 12-under, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80-over.

Proceeds of the race will go towards the Christ Church Youth Ministry Endowment Fund, set up in Sadiki’s memory and the Wakefield High School’ s Just Think First, Choices Count program. |
| Second Empire Grand Prix: |
The Run for Young is also the first event in the eight-race Second Empire Spring 2010 Grand Prix Series. Other races in the Spring Series are the Run for the Roses in Raleigh on Sunday, February 7, the Polar Plunge 5K in Raleigh on Saturday, February 20, the WakeMed Cary Distance Festival in Cary on Saturday, March 6, the Run for the Oaks in Raleigh on Saturday, March 13, the St. Timothy’s School Spring Sprint in Raleigh on Saturday, April 17, the Second Empire 5K Classic in Raleigh on Sunday, May 2, and the Inside-Out Sports Classic Half-Marathon in Cary on Sunday, May 17. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series.
